Picking a video quality

Every MP4 option has sound, and you see each file size before you tap, so there is no wrong choice. Here is what each one is good for.

  • 144p and 240p

Very small files that save quickly. Fine for talks, podcasts with video, or when your phone is almost full.

  • 360p

A simple everyday choice for small phone screens. It looks clear enough and keeps the file small.

  • 480p

A little sharper than 360p, still light on space. Handy for longer videos you want to watch on the bus or a plane.

  • 720p (HD)

Clear and crisp on most phones and tablets. A good middle ground between picture and file size.

  • 1080p (Full HD)

The sharpest option here, made for laptops, big tablets and TVs. Files are larger, so check your free space first.

The highest quality available is 1080p. If a video was uploaded in lower quality, you will only see the options it has.

Saving an MP4 on your phone

Phones sometimes play the video instead of saving it right away. That is normal, and saving it takes just a moment.

  • Android with Chrome

If the video starts playing in a new tab, tap the three dots (⋮) at the top and choose Download. You will find it later in your Downloads or Files app.

  • iPhone and iPad with Safari

When the video opens, tap the share or download icon, or long-press the video and pick Download or Save. On iPhone, saved files usually go to the Files app, in the Downloads folder.

  • Opened inside another app?

If you tapped a link inside Instagram, Facebook or TikTok, the built-in browser may block the download. Open this page in Chrome or Safari instead and try again.

  • Not enough space

If saving fails, your phone may be short on storage. Try a smaller quality like 360p, or clear a few old files first.

On a computer, the file either downloads straight away or plays in a tab. If it plays, right-click it and choose Save video as.

When a video is very long

Long videos work just like short ones. A two-hour lecture or a full concert can be saved, and there is no length limit. The only thing that changes is the file size, which grows with both length and quality.

Before you tap, look at the size shown next to each option. For a long video on a phone, 360p or 480p usually keeps things manageable. Save 1080p for when you have plenty of space and a steady Wi-Fi connection, so the download doesn't stop halfway.

Live streams that are still running can't be saved. Wait until the stream has ended and try again.

How to download a YouTube video as MP4

It only takes three small steps, on any phone, tablet or computer.

  1. Copy the video link

In the YouTube app, tap Share and then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from the top of the browser.

  2. Paste it and tap the button

Paste the link into the box at the top of this page and tap the button. You will see the video title, its length and a list of MP4 qualities with their sizes.

  3. Tap the quality you want

The MP4 opens in a new tab. If it plays instead of downloading, save it from the browser menu, as shown above.

YouTube to MP4 questions

Does every MP4 file have sound?

Yes. Every video quality, from 144p to 1080p, includes the sound. You don't need to download the audio separately.

Can I get 4K or 1440p video?

No. The highest quality offered is 1080p, which is Full HD. That looks sharp on phones, laptops and most TVs.

Why do I see fewer quality options for some videos?

The list depends on how the video was uploaded. If someone uploaded it in 480p, you won't see 720p or 1080p, because those versions don't exist for that video.

Will the MP4 play on my phone or TV?

MP4 is one of the most widely supported video formats. It plays in the built-in video players on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac, and on most smart TVs from a USB stick.

Can I save YouTube Shorts as MP4?

Yes. Paste the Shorts link just like a normal one and pick a quality. Shorts are vertical, so they look natural on a phone screen.

Is a YouTube video download like this allowed?

It depends on the video. Only save videos you made yourself, that are in the public domain or under a licence that allows it, or that you have permission to keep, and use them personally. This site is not connected to YouTube or Google.
